Every school system offers various
types of professional development. Professional Development courses
earn teacher PDU's (Professional Development Unit's) which are needed
to renew teaching certificates.
Professional Development courses keep you abreast of the latest
resources in your field.
You may seek professional development courses in your field
at the local or county level.
Reading/math specialists, media specialists or technology
coordinators will generally teach courses at your local school.
Teachers may choose from a variety of courses in their academic area.
In many courses, a professional text is given or presented to each
teacher.
Some schools may offer Book Clubs
to encourage teacher
collaboration along with a book study.
The media center houses current professional books and/or
journals. As a busy new teacher you may ask your media specialist to
copy the table of contents of current journals each month for you to
peruse. You may also request to be notified by your media specialist
when new professional journals are purchased in certain areas that
interest you.
Your media specialist is your partner in staying current and
obtaining new books in your field.
