AASL Standard 2
Teaching and Learning

School library media candidates model and promote collaborative planning with classroom teachers in order to teach concepts and skills of information processes integrated with classroom content. They partner with other education professionals to develop and deliver an integrated information skills curriculum. Candidates design and implement instruction that engages the student's interests, passions, and needs which drive their learning.

Project: I-Search (Pre-notetaking 1, Pre-notetaking 2, Double Draft Entry, Journal 1, Journal 2, Journal 3, Journal 4, Journal 5, Final Journal, Final Product, Learning Log)

The I-Search is an inquiry-based research method which focuses on the personal interests of the researcher. The researcher is internally motivated to discover answers or find a solution which makes this type of research more personally meaningful.

I was unfamiliar with this research process when I began this assignment but by the end was completely won over. I have never really enjoyed research but basing the assignment on my personal interests really motivated me to investigate and find answers to my essential question. The final result was not only learning a new method of research but a product that I could actually use. If I were to do this assignment again I would try to make my focus more narrow as I think I got a little overwhelmed by having multiple parts to my essential question.
Justification: Information Literacy Curriculum

Project: Collaborative Unit (Worksheet, Curriculum Map)

Effective partnerships between the media specialist and the classroom teacher allow for opportunities to practice collaborative planning and instruction. Planning collaboratively allows for covering content information as well as the integration of information literacy components into units of instruction.

I definitely see the benefits to students when teachers and media specialists are able to plan and teach in collaboration with one another but am not sure how often true collaboration as taught through this assignment/course actually occurs in the real world. I think by focusing on the state standards (GPS) and how you as the media specialist can help teachers meet these standards will go a long way to motivating teachers to join the collaborative process.
